UNCOVERING THE COMPLEXITY OF THE MICROSOFT SPLA PROGRAM
I have a question on SPLA licensing and was wondering if you can help.
The Sage application on our IaaS platform requires Excel to be installed on the server to allow an add-in to be used. As there will be no direct user interaction with Excel, we do not require any RDS SALs.
My question is do we need to licenses Office Std SALs with the number of users that access Sage or just a single license?
Kind Regards

It’s any user that has access to your application. (not necessarily Excel) this is called indirect access). A SAL is anybody who has direct or indirect access. Ask your reseller for the price of Excel as compared to Office STD. Good rule of thumb – if I remove this product from my hosted solution, would it still work the same as it did prior? If “no” it needs a SPLA license for that user.
